The University of Concepcion, Chile (UdeC) with the support of Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), would like to invite you to be part of the Workshop “Water, Climate Change and Natural disasters: Impact and Prospects for the Bio-Bio Region”. The Workshop will take place in the city of Concepción, Chile on November 15-16, 2010.

On February 27th of this year, a large number of ports, towns and large cities along Chile’s south-central coast were devastated by an earthquake and the tsunami that followed. The most affected area was the Bio-bio Region which, with more than 1.8 million inhabitants, is one of the Chile’s most populous regions.

Although the earthquake had a significant economic impact on the Region, some see the catastrophe as an opportunity for re-thinking a new sustainable model for development; in particular they see an opportunity for evolution in the Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) system to address new challenges posed by climate change.

The Workshop, hosted by The Universidad de Concepcion in Chile, aims to assess strengths and weaknesses of the current WSS and to determine how the WSS can be adapted to better respond to climatic uncertainty in the Bio-Bio region.

The workshop contains 3 topics:

1. Impacts and Evaluation: Economic and environmental impacts of the earthquake on the water sector.

2. Adaptation to Climate Change in the Bio-Bio Region: Analysis of the interconnection between water and climate change at the regional level so as to understand how they are affected by each other and what mitigation and adaptation measures may contribute to improving the current condition in Bio Bio.

3. Water and Innovation: Exploring water innovation by means of new technologies and new policies to be proposed, and potentially in the future tested, adapted and adopted by defining the dynamics of innovation regarding the water sector in the Bio Bio region

We hope you may attend the Workshop, due to the importance of addressing the discussion on these issues for the benefit of our region future. This Workshop is included within the activities of the UdeC Bio-Bio Region Reconstruction Program and the Celebration of 20 years after the creation of the Environmental Science Center EULA-Chile.
